Part of the fun of collecting folk art is knowing the history of the piece - who made it, when & where? Sadly, this charming wall box found in Iowa did not come with any detail of its origin - so my assumption is that it was made around the turn of the century to store special love letters! Who knows if my version of its past is accurate - but it's obvious that this delightful piece was hand made as a one-of-a-kind gift for someone loved. It is made of walnut and measures 16' long and 12' wide. The lower section which was designed to as a holder, folds out and is attached on both sides by leather tacked in place. The piece features an inscribed bird on the top and an applied decal on the lower section.
Whether you collect wall boxes or bird related items, this piece would be a great addition to a folk art collection.
